New Mexico - Black Berets say they were targeted

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - Albuquerque police are investigating a targeted shooting that may have been started by a biker gang, leaving two people wounded. The apparent target of this attack, the Black Berets motorcycle club, say they were helping a family raise money for their 15-year-old granddaughter.

Members of the Black Berets say their focus is on the community, and promoting motorcyclists in a positive way. They say they were targeted for their strong ties to Albuquerque. Now, the Berets say this won't be forgotten.

"Those sons of [expletive], it ain't over with them," a member of the Black Berets said.

An Albuquerque motorcycle club is on edge after they say another club targeted them and an innocent family.

"They came in here and started shooting up the place, started shooting at my brothers, no questions asked just started shooting for no reason at all," a member named Chale said.

Witnesses say there were a lot of shots fired.

"We heard one shot, then several," one witness said. "I'm talking 20 to 25."

"I was thinking more like 30, but yeah, there were a lot of shots going on," another witness said.

It all happened at a fundraiser for a 15-year-old girl, where the Black Berets were on hand.

"That's uncalled for," Chale said. "This was a benefit for a little girl."

Chale says the club had no issues with anyone and believes they were attacked because of the role they play in the city.

"They came over here and retaliated against us because were strong here in Albuquerque."

According the club's website, they work "to promote a positive image for motorcyclists" and "support civic and veteran activities and benefits."

"That's what we do, what the Black Berets stand for," Chale said. "We help out the needy, we help out vets."

So, who's behind the ambush?

Witnesses say it's a relatively new face in town, the Vagos.

According to their website, the Vagos' roots can be traced back to San Bernadino, California, formed for protection from rival clubs and police harassment.

APD hasn't confirmed if they are in fact the ones responsible.

As for the grandfather of the teenage girl, of who the benefit was for, he says he's just shocked.

"We've had benefits here before and everything went real well. To have something like this go on is scary."

APD likely has a busy night ahead of them as they continue the investigation. Officials say lots of people have been detained for questioning, but it's not clear if any arrests have been made at this time.
