What's your question? Want straight pipes. it was sugested i put a resistor on to keep from having to tweak the computer. Tips, hints, suggestions?
Details: I want to put straight pipes on. A friend (who custom built choppers back in the day), suggested I put a resistor (?) in place where the pipes connect to the engine. This way, I would not have to have the on-board computer tweaked. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Any hints, tips or suggestions?

  1. What you're talking about here is what are called "torque cones", the equivalent of baffles, or mufflers...only inserted into the top of the exhaust pipe. I'll assume you're wanting to install the straight pipes for either their "look", or the "sound". And by "straight pipes" I don't mean pipes that are "straight", I mean pipes that have a "straight through" exhaust. That's the "real" definition...semantics aside. What "tweaking" the computer does is adjust the FI to the flow of the pipes. It's done on expensive equipment and is pretty accurate. Adding whatever you consider a "resistor" IS NOT! You'll probably have to deal with other issues related to your "experiment". Good luck! By: 47Knuckle-Dragger on: 3-14-2007

  2. IF you are wanting to alter your exhaust, may as well alter the breather also. This bike runs so lean anything you do to it will require a remap. That includes starting it. Harley has a recall for the remap. While drag pipes look good they are only good at the top end of the rpm scale. All right for drag racing not great for street performance. I digress you did not ask about that. Yes exhaust resistance is a pluss for bottom and mid range performance and to help your valve train function. Torque cones baffles etc all increase torque. for a real old school effect tghat works. drill a 1/4 inch hole through your pipes, insert a bolt all the way through, weld a flat washer to the bolt. For wide open pipes lots of noise and pissing off neighbors, turn the washer to wear it is at a ninty to the lenght of the pipe. For more torque and noise reduction turn it to where you can see the washer and the hole in the washer. that is the resistance you want. Have fun. oh yeah you might want to friction lock or use a stiff spring to lock your home made baffle in place. For more control add a couple more in place. open the air ways, flow more fuel, go more faster.n yeehaa By: Mark_Goff on: 3-14-2007
