  1. When building a Harley from scratch...there is no set cheapest way, that's strictly in your realm of negotiation for new and used parts.

Frame-up building is a tough row to hoe unless you're comfortable and versed around creative contruction. If you're a novice at this...you'll probably chuck your project after a few problems and buy something that's rideable (on average).

Don't expect anyone to respond unless they know how commited you are to this. It's a long, drawn out process that tests the best intentions.

  2. I have built a few customs & we always start with stock or custom frame...then we chop that into what we want to build. You have to know how to mathematically set up your rake and trail of the chop and get the look you want to achieve. There are a lot of variables to take into consideration. You have to figure your front end length, tire size etc. if the geometry is not correct you probably kill yourself...as you will only build a tank slapper and loose control. 3. I build all mine from scratch. and on just "Dollars" spent its pretty cheap. The question is what are YOUR skills and whats in YOUR shop. Building a frame requires a bender, chop saw,a level flat welding table and a welder(I prefer Tig welding ), besides a bit of fabrication knowledge. a Lathe, and a Mill, and a glass beader,a polishing wheel, also come in handy. Right now Evo Big Twin used parts seem cheaper. If you can assemble and true flywheels,bore/hone cylinders, hone valve guides and cut valve seats yourself its very cheap. If any of this seems over your head, dont open a can of worms you cant close. Buy someones already running bike and rebuild to your taste. IMHO By: HBF11365 on: 11-30-2008

  6. you might consider an aftermarket frame from Denvers, or any other established frame buider you can have the frame built to your specs, while getting an encyclopidia worth of knowledge at the same time. I would consider rigid as it cuts cost quite a bit, no swingarm or suspension components to worry with. Swap meets are good places to hit for wheels and seats, forks etc. Keep it simple with your wiring. I have bought a couple of the Harley transmissions and engines crate form, and your dealer can help you with wiring up the ignition. The dealership in michigan usually has the best price. Lakeside or something like that. By: MarkGoff on: 12-4-2008

  9. If your looking to build from ground up and need good parts on a poor man budget like myself go to foghollow.com. They have everything you will need from kits to single parts or if you are building an old bike they even have used parts that are in quality condition By: fmreb on: 2-11-2009
