What's your question? No spark in cold temps
Details: This comes from a friend in SE AZ. When the temps are cold he gets no spark at the plugs. When the temps warm up everything is fine. He's asking if any other Sportster owners have had this problem, or if anyone has a clue. This guy is a greybeard and has a lot of time in and around motorcycles. Any suggestions?

  1. what you see most often is that the cold weather contracts the wiring enough that it causes a short...when it warms and expands, you make contact and power is restored. Best way to find is with a heat gun and then checking continuity to the area found to be causing the problem..with the heat gun, warm up one area at a time until power is restored then check the wiring in that area for continuity once it cools again....ME, I would start at the coil.. chance are that the plastic that insulates the coil is contracting and keeping bike from firing......let us know what you find out.............hired By: hired on: 2-18-2009

  2. I guess everything else is working like horn, lights etc? I would think the issue is coil also. Just swap it out, hard to chase an intermittint short. Coils can be picky when it comes to either heat or cold. Cannot imagine both plug wires acting up at same time. make sure both plugs are clean tight though. Good luck By: MarkGoff on: 2-18-2009

  3. You can check the coils' resistance on both sides. If it runs ok otherwise, maybe it's too damn cold! Hey, I used to ride all the time in all weather till I turned 50 then everything started changing...ARF!!! By: capnbill on: 2-22-2009
