Hi 4-e eating coils
|
| Details: |
My Hi4-e is eating coils"4 harleys,2 accels,1 HI-per single-fire 45,000volts,," "Yes they are 3ohms" A brother gave me a coil off a car with duel spark-plug taps,,2and1/2 ohms input"Primary". Does anyone know if it will work???? This is gettin' EXPENSIVE!! PS I do like the hi-4 e,,except for this problem!! Thanks |
Answers:
- Coils, spark plug wires and spark plugs all have to match. Each setup gets a simple 12V input, so that's not the problem. They're all grounded by the spark plug, so that's not the problem. The circuit breaker doesn't have the capacity to eat up a coil...so that's not the problem. As Shakespeare once put it, "When you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth." In other words...doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results just ain't workin' for you." By: 47Knuckle-Dragger on: 7-16-2010
- Hi Stroker, as a rule of thumb anything 3 ohms or less should be kept on the race track and on the street you should be running 5 ohm coils. Lower resistance coils pass more current and that creates heat build up. That's not a problem if you're racing on a 1/4 mile straightaway. But in traffic it can be. Assuming everything is wired correctly (and with the right wires) your Hi-4 will work well with a 5 ohm coil. By: stillshovelin76 on: 7-19-2010
- 4.5-5 ohm coils are used in a point-triggered ignition (dual fire). 2+-3 ohm coils are used in electronic ignition (dual fire). Using a 5 ohm coil with an electronic ignition will burn up the ignition (eventually). By: 47Knuckle-Dragger on: 7-20-2010
- Thanks,,,My computer got hit by lightning,,so I've been out of it for a few days. There is a shop near me that said this is a common problem with the HI-4's. And each time I did check everything and tried new combinations, but to no avial. Knuck47 is right,,3ohms is what an electronic ig. calls for. I'm tempted to go back to points!!!! - Thanks for all your help. Does anyone know what a single-fire coil should regester? OHMS? Pri. and sec.??? By: stroker on: 7-27-2010
- guest,,, Thanks for the info. I have accel 8.8mm supp.wires. and runnin'boush platinum plugs. I will check which side of the coil is burnin' out and get back to ya. I here I'm not the only one havin' these problems. By: stroker on: 7-30-2010
- Thanks once again to the guest for the answers. Your advice was right on. The burn-out was half and half on the primary and secondarys,,so problem not solved. " Some-times electrical problems drive ya crazy!!! By: stroker on: 7-31-2010
- Update,,,,I put a crane single-fire coil on and so far problem solved... By: stroker on: 12-1-2011
