Answers:
- Rubber has a shelf life. Sometimes a certain model, or size sits in the warehouse, or shop, for a long time before someone buys them. While those tires sit there they deteriorate, they simply 'dry out'. Once you mount those tires and put pressure to them you'll see rubber cracks everywhere, not just the sides. If you deflate the tire and spread the tread on the tire...you'll see small cracks in between the tread, too.
Are they safe...that's the question. Avon tires are the softest rubber of a tire I've ever run, except for racing slicks. For an Avon tire to show cracks probably means those tires have been around for a while. I don't think a tire that's over 5 years old is safe to run. Read this: How To Read a Motorcycle Tire Back in the '60s I was a little strapped for cash and bought a tire from an indie shop that they'd had there since they opened...and no one bought. It was a 4.50x18. That puppy was so hard I could hardly get it over the Kelsey-Hayes steel rim. It showed cracks in the side of it as soon as I filled it with air. I ran that tire for almost 30,000 miles before I went to a 19" rim. The tire still had tread on it when I tossed it in the dumpster. - I run Avon Road Runners on the front. Every one of them have small cracks after a short. Nothing unusual, I get good wear, good adhesion on corners and sheds water like a firehose. Course I pay attention to tire pressure and during off months (winter) I put the scoots up on lifts, off the concrete, suspension unloaded. JM.02$ By: BomberBob on: 8-16-2010
