What's your question? Any ideas on what could be the problem with a grinding starter?
Details: Starter grinds occassionally when starting. When it happens, I'll let up on the "Start" switch and try it again and it won't happen. I did accidently press the "Start" button while it was running and I think that's what f'd up my starter. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

  1. I haven't fucked with any starter systems that new...but no matter what year, trying to start the bike while it's already running, I'll bet you looked around to see if anybody saw you do that, huh? Anyway...

At least you're onto what the cause might be. I suggest you pull the clutch shell and eyeball each tooth of the starter ring gear. The starter gear is hardened steel...the starter ring gear is mild steel, so it's the first to go. If the starter ground each time you tried to start it...I'd say it was the starter gear. If it's intermittent...it's the starter ring gear. I think on your year the ring gear is pressed on the clutch basket, you might check on that as well. By: 47Knuckle-Dragger on: 9-17-2010

  2. Test your battery voltage as well. If your battery is weak, the starter will not mesh smoothly. Motor not running, your voltage should be high 12's to low 13's. Load testing by cranking the engine, the voltage should stay above 10 volts. If it drops below, You might need a new battery. Not hard to pull the starter or the clutch basket if you have to. Keep us posted! Hatch. By: hatchetman on: 9-18-2010

  3. +Try and check the space your starter and ring gear have, the starter gear should come all the way out and engage the teeth fully if it is not fully engaged it will strip the ring gear on the back side in some spots and then when in those positions it will grind By: Mohovie on: 10-15-2010
