1978 Ironhead Starter issue??
|
| Details: |
Greetings all, I'm usually quiet here but I've got mysellf stuck. My Ironhead just clicks when I hit the starter button. I replaced the battery, checked the switch, and have removed the starter and put power to it and it winds up good. I've heard that the little gear on it is supposed to come out to engage?? It dont when I hook cables to it. Maybe the solonoid under the batt. box?? Any suggestions are much appreciated. Thanks in advance. |
Answers:
- possibly the starter solenoid, you can take them apart and sand the contacts, or we used to By: capnbill on: 4-13-2011
- The start button supplies power to trigger the starter relay, The relay supplies power to trigger the solenoid, and the solenoid supplies power to the starter motor. Start by checking the button to relay, then relay to solenoid, and finally solenoid to starter. see where you are losing power, I'm thinking it's at the relay. By: Guest on: 4-13-2011
- I had a 75 Ironhead with the same issue, somehow the gear does not extend far enough to engage the flywheel. I always had to have a buddy apply pressure on the starter with his boot and it was enough to engage it. My solution was eventually to put a kick start kit on it. That was a long time ago, for me, I was 19 in 1978 and that is when I actually did it. Good luck. By: Guest on: 4-13-2011
- Could be a bad battery or battery connection . By: Guest on: 4-13-2011
- If you know the battery to be in good shape it could very well be the starter button i used to have to replace mine every 3 to 4 years. Those little round button contacts were easy to corrode. If thats ok its probaly the contacts and/ or the solenoid. Good luck, had a lot of good times on those XL's.... By: Guest on: 4-17-2011
- If all you hear is a click when the button is pushed and the jackshaft is not attempting to engage, start with the relay. And if you plan on keeping the ironhead for any amount of time, buy 2. By: buckrdmc on: 4-26-2011
