| What's your question? |
I want to know if anyone else has had the same electrical problem I had
|
| Details: |
In 07 my electrical system went out at night, but close to home thankfully. I took my scoot to the local Hd dealer who told my whole charging system was gone. $992.00 later I'm back on the road. I found a site called harley davidson recalls, well there was one on the 01 about a circuit breaker that would open and you would lose all power for unknown reasons. How can I fing out if I was fucked by the dealer when maybe all they had to do was replace the circuit breaker. They said they replaced the;stater, alternator and voltage regulator. Just asking for some intel |
Answers:
- I work at a dealership and remember that recall. It does not effect your model, because they no longer use a circuit breaker. Your bike has a main fuse. It turned out that the problem was not actually the circuit breaker, but the connector on the wire at the circuit was getting oxidized causing increase in the amperage on the wire. The increased amperage caused the wire to heat up, and blow the thermal breaker. I suspect what happened to your bike was the compensator nut loosened up, causing the alternator parts to get damaged. Prior to the system going down, did you heard any kind of clunking noise when you shut the bike off? By: Guest on: 10-24-2011
- Just got done battling with the same issue on an 02FLHTCUI, except this one had an ESP so it only cost the customer 50.00. Bike would lose all electrical power until circuit breaker cooled and reset. This would happen at random times and for no apparent reason. I will tell you that HD could not have found a more assnine place to put a heat sensitive circuit breaker! Make a long story short, the 50 amp breaker was removed and replaced with a 40 amp Maxi fuse set up that is currently used on newer models. The bike has been ridden approx. 1500 miles since with no issues. By: Guest on: 10-25-2011
- I rechecked my resources and the recall site still say's there was a recall on the 01 flhtcui and the prob was a 40 amp main circuit breaker that caused the bike to lose all power. Guest, I also heard no noise when the bike shut down I just coasted to my driveway and loaded her up By: bowzram on: 10-28-2011
- I'm sorry, I thought it said your bike was an 07. Yeah, an 01 was definitely involved in that recall. The breaker would have cut out, and killed the bike, but it would have reset it self after it cooled down, and the bike would seem fine until the breaker cut out again. Is that what was happening to you?

- Does it loose all electrical power? Must you replace the maxi fuse to get it going again or does just the engine shut off? By: Guest on: 11-16-2011

- Thanks for the help guy's. Mine happened back in 07 it died motor, lights, everything went out. I took it to the local dealer right away like the next day. I am just wondering if I was duped in spending almost a grand to fix problem. I just found out through a friend at the dealer that the dealer listed that the recall had service had already been done in 04, I know this was not done because I stopped doing business with them in 03. Any ideas on what recourse I might have? By: bowzram on: 11-18-2011
