What's your question? Secondary cam chain tensioner problem, can anyone tell me the trick to installing the secondary cam chain tensioner without removing cam's from cam plate?
Details: I know this can be done but I have forgotten exactly how, gettin old I guess. Thanks for any help.

  1. You really can't change the tensioner without removing the cams. I can't see how you would be able to get the tail of the spring in place, and fight the spring pressure to get the tensioner on the post. By: Guest on: 1-6-2012

  2. There is no trick. You need special tools, and cam plate has to be removed. You will always have a problem with chain. Spend a little more and have a set of gear cams installed. Solves problem and picks up some horsepower. Find a good shop to do this labor for you. By: BADDASSBIKER on: 1-7-2012

  3. Yes, you have to take the whole thing apart. I had the stealer do it once and did the next one myself, except for the inside adjuster. A local man did it for me for $30. (I took the cam plate to him) I'll go with gears on the next trip. By: capnbill on: 1-7-2012

  4. There is really no reason to run the chain and tensioner if you are already in the cam chest. The tensioner is going to fall apart at some point. Whenever I do a cam job on any pre-07 TC, I REFUSE to put the chain back in, unless the poor guy has a major runout issue on the pinion. Has to be 3-thou or less for gears, and I prefer under 1-thou, otherwise they clatter too much and can even fail if the runout is too big. Ironically 07-later bikes seem to have more runout, along with the improved chain tensioner. Either way, you want a REALLY good motor, you have to take her apart, true the crank (weld it preferred) and run gears. $$$ By: Guest on: 1-11-2012
