| What's your question? |
how do I determine the right offset on the tranny sprocket, the right offset on the tranny plate and the spacing of the rear tire to get primary - tranny - and rear tire in proper alignment

I just got an afetrmarket primary from VTwin - the tranny is an Ultima 5 spd - and I will be running a chain final drive and I need to get everythin in proper alignment - how do I determine the proper width of the tranny sprocket and tranny plate offset and any rear wheel spacing the frame is set up for a 180mm rear tire witha belt and 200mm rear tire with a chain - there are 10 inches between the side plates on the frame (softail). |
Answers:
- Seems to me the witdth of the sprockets should all be the same. I would then center my rear wheel in the frame. Your motor and trans should also be centered. Any offsetting should be done with the transmission sprocket first. This is where you will end up doing some creative engineering. Bourget and others are using a jackshaft. I like that. You can also space the rear sprocket a little. too much outer spacing on the trans will make it weak.
Remember to have fun take your time. Lock tite everything when you have it all lined up.
All I did was flip the sprocket to get my extra spacing I needed to clear a 180 that was originally a 160.
Don't be afraid to tweak your swing arm or frame a little either.
I hate the off set the motor, and trans crap seems to mess up how the bike handles, I have ridden a couple they seem to realy pull to the left and high speed right turns are a bit of a bear. By: Mark_Goff on: 2-21-2007
