Tank is starting to leak a bit from the middle tank mount. Had it welded 2-3 years ago. Red Kote or ?? Any suggestions? I'm not ready for a new tank just yet...Thanks

Answers:
- I suggest you weld it again. You'll only stop a leak temporarily from a crack that is growing by using sealant. Had you coated the tank the last time it was welded...with this crack you might not have known it was there until it broke off and gushed gas all over your balls at 70 MPH. Been there, done that. - 47KD has it pegged...that's the only permanent(or close to it)fix. But I have used POR15 tank coating/sealer on the inside of the tank and Epibond on the standoff area on the outside. It's lasted several years. Although it's on the back of your mind alot... By: Slyde on: 6-22-2009

- Don't use aftermarket tanks. They tend to spring leaks a lot more than Harley tanks do. By: greybeard77 on: 6-23-2009
- might try brazing, with silver, I found that a silver braze worked just fine. Remember to stop drill both ends of the crack. Brazing creates less heat on the original metal. By: MarkGoff on: 6-27-2009
- After the tank is fixed and pressure tested, make SURE you shim everything properly. Too much stress is a bad thing, according to the AMA (that's a joke, son, that's a joke...) By: capnbill on: 6-27-2009
- Tanks that won't be pressurized do not need to be 'pressure tested' after welding. To test the weld for 'leakage' pour in a couple ounces of acetone making sure you don't splash any on the paint; cap off the tank and shake for a couple seconds. Look at the weld. If it's wicking from the weld it will leak when there's gas in the tank.
Empty the acetone out and wipe the opening clean. By: 47Knuckle-Dragger on: 6-28-2009
