Australia - ~Man charged with murder over 2001 death of Darren Britza~

A GOLD Coast man has been charged over an eight-year-old cold case murder after police used a CSI-style forensic laser for the first time to search for suspected hidden bloodstains.

The man, 35, was taken into custody at Labrador this morning and charged with the murder of Darren John Britza.

Mr Britza is alleged to have been murdered in 2001 in a killing linked to outlaw bikies. His skeletal remains were found in a shallow grave under a bridge at Boyland, in the Gold Coast Hinterland, in March last year.

Last week, police used a forensic laser to search for bloodstains in a Southport workshop which was believed to have been used by associates of bikie gang members involved in drug distribution and car re-birthing.

Queensland police are not equipped with the laser technology but called in their NSW counterparts to examine a workbench where they suspect bloodstains may have been hidden under layers of paint.

Gold Coast police regional crime co-ordinator Dave Hutchinson would not say yesterday if the laser examination led police directly to the suspect.

"All we're saying at this stage is that we're very pleased with the results of the examination and our investigation is progressing well," he said.

Police had to go to elaborate lengths to identify Mr Britza, who was 31 when he died in 2001.

A missing persons report was never filed and distinctive Marks & Spencer boxer shorts found on the body led police to believe the man was a tourist.

It took investigators two months to identify Mr Britza with the help of DNA and a British company which assisted with recovering information from a badly damaged SIM card in the pocket of his jeans.

A Nerang man is expected to face Beenleigh Magistrate's Court tomorrow charged with murder.
