Washington - AUBURN, Wash. - An Auburn family targeted in a murder-for-hire plot is reacting to the story they saw on KING 5 News Thursday night.
Auburn resident Dave Davis says since his former daughter-in-law's arrest in October, he's known of the alleged murder-for-hire plot. But Thursday was the first time he saw the Auburn Police Department's undercover video that shows her hiring a hit man.
"It took me by surprise," he said.
That was Dave Davis's reaction when he saw his former daughter-in-law commit the ultimate act of betrayal.
"It hasn't always been hostile," Davis said. "It's been up and down. She'll be friendly one week and unfriendly the next."
But Davis never imagined that she would resort to an alleged attempt to wipe out the entire Davis family.
In an evidence tape obtained by KING 5, Davis's former daughter Beth Beimer thinks she's soliciting a hit man. Detectives says the main target was Robert Davis, Beimer's ex-husband, with whom she was locked in a bitter custody battle.
But when she met an undercover detective in an Auburn motel room, authorities say she brought photos of several family members she wanted killed, plus a pipe bar to use as a murder weapon and a mapped layout of Dave Davis's Auburn house. There's one point on the tape where she's laughing.
"That's why I can't make sense of it; it's not the right reaction," Davis said. "Something's wrong there."
Beimer was arrested after the undercover sting. She has pleaded "not guilty" while awaiting trial, and has at least one former in-law who is trying hard to forgive.
"My hope is that one day we'll be friends again," Davis said. "Because after all, that woman is the mother of my granddaughter."
KING 5 was unable to reach anyone at Beimer's home today. She lives with her parents and her lawyer has not returned our phone calls.
How did investigators learn about this plot? They say that Beimer first asked a friend -- a former member of the Hells Angels - to do the job.
When she became insistent, he worried that she really meant it and he went to the police.
Dave Davis says that man is the real hero in this story.
