Finding biker friendly motels while on vacation

Michigan - How many times have you planned a motorcycle vacation and were surprised when you arrived at a motel only to find that either they were shocked by the bikes rolling in or you were shocked by the gravel parking lot? The best way to assure that both you and your hosts are happy is to plan ahead. The internet is a great source of information about just about everything from food to attractions to motels. One of the best websites to begin your search is TripAdvisor. It is a widely used site for obtaining information and reviews for places all over the world. The reviews are written by real travelers and are, for the most part, very honest. You will have to do a little homework, though, when searching for biker friendly places within TripAdvisor. If a reviewer is a motorcycle traveler, they will usually mention that in at least one of their posted reviews. You then can search every post by the reviewer to get more reviews on places that are biker friendly. TripAdvisor also has a feature allowing you to send a personal message (like email) to the reviewer. If you have a more specific question regarding your motorcycle vacation, ask and you will probably receive an answer. The reviewers for TripAdvisor and other websites are eager to share their experiences. You can then narrow down your choices based on the reviews and the amenities. Finally, when traveling by motorcycle, call the local motel you plan to visit and let them know you are a motorcyclist. Ask if the parking lot is paved and level. Ask if you can park outside your door (important for dragging in the stuff you have strapped to your luggage rack). If they have a problem with motorcyclists, you will know within minutes of talking to them. If you have done some research, you will already have feeling if they are biker friendly or not. You will probably be calling a place that will tell you "we get bikers in here all the time." You then will know you are among friends. To help other bikers, consider joining either TripAdvisor or another online reviewing website. Post your own reviews and let others know how you were treated as a traveler and as a biker. Working together we can create a network of businesses that not only welcome us as bikers but encourage us to patronize them.
