Australia - The Police Commissioner Karl O'Callaghan says he does not intend to use the proposed stop and search laws for random searches of ordinary members of the public.
Giving evidence to a parliamentary committee, the Commissioner said rather than searching random members of the public, police would be given a directive to search people matching a certain profile.
Under the legislation, police will have the power to search people in a designated area without their consent and without reasonable suspicsion.
Mr O'Callaghan said that if police knew an outlaw motorcycle club was heading for a particular country town, farmers would not be searched but bikies would.
