Detroit - The U.S. Attorney's Office on Wednesday charged a Brownstown Township police officer with lying to the FBI in connection with the federal investigation of the Highwaymen Motorcycle Club.

Officer Matthew Elmer Wilds, 31, is charged with making false statements and is suspected of leaking information about a meeting between the FBI and a confidential informant, according to a complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Detroit.

Information about the meeting -- held in 2006 at a closed fire station in Brownstown Township -- got back to the Highwaymen, FBI Special Agent Edward Brzezinski said in an affidavit.

Wilds, a police officer since 1999, entered the fire station to use the restroom during the meeting but did not see the informant, who hid, the complaint alleges. Shortly after, Wilds drove behind the fire station and saw the informant talking to a Brownstown detective, the complaint said.

A few weeks later, Highwaymen associate Dennis Abraham told members a source told him he saw the detective with an unknown member of the club. Abraham announced "there was a snitch in the club," according to the complaint.

The Detroit News reported June 16 the FBI is targeting the Highwaymen -- which it considers Detroit's largest outlaw motorcycle gang -- in an investigation that involves suspected drug dealing, murder for hire, interstate theft, acts of violence, mortgage and insurance fraud and police corruption. More than 40 people are charged to date, and the case could be one of Michigan's largest, with more than 100 defendants.

Wilds, who has not been arraigned, was not on duty Wednesday and did not return a call to his home. Calls to police officials and a detective were not returned.

Wilds is not accused of leaking information directly to the Highwaymen, but in interviews with the FBI he lied about what he saw and who he told, the complaint alleges.

"The information regarding this incident, which circulated through the Brownstown Police Department and eventually to the Highwaymen originated from PO Matthew Wilds," Brzezinski said.

Abraham, 53, of Ann Arbor was also charged Wednesday for allegedly possessing bike parts with altered identification numbers.
