Illinois - EDWARDSVILLE - The purported president of the Outlaws motorcycle gang's Alton chapter was charged Tuesday with two counts of unlawful possession of a controlled substance, two counts of criminal sexual assault and one count of unlawful restraint.
John L. Coffman, 50, of the 800 block of South Neunaber Avenue, Bethalto, was charged in Madison County Circuit Court after a woman reported the alleged assaults to police, who subsequently executed a search warrant at his home.
He is accused of possessing less than 15 grams of cocaine and less than 15 grams of a prescription pain drug. A source said the drugs were "secreted on his person."
The Bethalto Police Department investigated the case after a local hospital reported to them that the victim was being treated for sexual assault.
The woman told police she was an associate of the Alton chapter of the Outlaws motorcycle club and that on Sunday night, Coffman invited her to his home, a travel trailer, police said.
She claimed that while she was at Coffman's home, he sexually assaulted her twice and held her against her will. She said she was able to escape when he fell asleep, and she went to the hospital.
Police learned that Coffman was out on supervised release after serving a federal prison sentence as a result of a 1998 conviction for possession of 45,000 units of ephedrine with intent to manufacture methamphetamine.
Authorities have filed a petition to revoke his release.
After obtaining a search warrant, officers from the Bethalto Police Department, the FBI, U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, Illinois State Police, the Madison County Sheriff's Department, the Metropolitan Enforcement Group of Southwestern Illinois, the Metro East Auto Theft Task Force and the Alton Police Department visited the home and made the arrest.
The sexual assault charges allege Coffman performed an act of forcible sexual penetration on the victim two times. He also allegedly held her down and threatened and intimidated her into feeling she was not free to leave.
