Had a special request from a long time BNN member and highly respectible 1%er. Some time on or around November 30, 2007, a girl names Carla Anne Beard was murdered in Anna Marie Island, FL.
Carla Ann Beard was found at the end of 50th St. in Holmes Beach just a few blocks north of the Manatee County Public Beach. It had been there for a few days. A $5000 reward has been offered by the Gold Star Club for information leading to the arrest of the person responsible. Contact here

State Government under attack over crime fighting

Australia - ~State Government under attack over crime fighting fund~

There has been criticism of the State Government's announcement that it is increasing funding to police and the director of public prosecutions to investigate outlaw bikie gangs and other organised crime.

The money will come from the Criminal Property Confiscation fund and will amount to more than $13 million over three years.

Police will get $3.45 million to target bikie gangs and suspicious people with unexplained wealth, the DPP gets an extra $1 million a year.

They will also get a further 30-cents each for every dollar collected when the fund exceeds $9 million per year.

Opposition MP, John Hyde, says the police and the DPP are gaining while community crime prevention groups will get less money.

"These are targeted projects that actually prevent crime from happening in the first place," he said.

"It doesn't make sense to be cutting crime prevention so as the police and the DPP have to spend more funds and more time to solve crimes that could have been prevented."

But the Attorney General, Christian Porter, says he expects that the extra funds given to the police will result in more criminal goods being confiscated, thereby still allowing crime prevention groups to access an adequate amount of money.

"There is in the very short term the possibility that there won't be as many of these smaller amounts given out to community groups but, as I say, over the next three or four years we'd expect some substantial increases in the size of the cake."
