Canada - ~Murder plot recordings poor, Hells Angels trial hears~ A hidden listening device on Hells Angels turncoat Steven Gault turned out poor-quality recordings of an alleged gangland murder plot, a Whitby courtroom heard today.
Det. Sgt. Peter Currie of the Ontario Provincial Police told Superior Court that investigators tried repeatedly to enhance the secretly-recorded tapes from the summer of 2006 by taking them to the Centre of Forensic Sciences and a private firm in Ottawa.
His comments came in the trial of Mark Cephes Stephenson, president of the Oshawa Hells Angels, and Remond (Ray) Akleh of the Hells Angels elite Nomads chapter.
Stephenson and Akleh are each charged with murder conspiracy and counsel to commit murder for allegedly directing Gault to murder Frank (Cisco) Lenti of the rival Bandidos club in the summer of 2006.
Currie said he personally listened to the recordings numerous times, in an attempt to determine exactly what was said when Gault met with Akleh and Stephenson.
Akleh's lawyer, Glenn Orr, asked the investigator if Akleh told Gault during a secretly-recorded meeting that he could find Lenti at the Club Pro strip club in Vaughan, where Lenti worked in security.
"Those words he did not say," Currie replied.
Orr pressed on, asking if Akleh volunteered the address of the club, where the alleged hitman could find Lenti.
"No sir," Currie replied.
Orr asked if Akleh once tried to contact Gault in mid-2006, when the murder plot was allegedly in effect.
"I don't believe he did," Currie replied.
Currie said that the Centre of Forensic Sciences told police that they didn't have time to enhance all of the recordings made by Gault, a member of the Oshawa Hells Angels who made more than $1-million working as a police agent against the biker club.
Gault earlier told court that Stephenson made a shooting motion with his fingers and a shoveling motion with his arms and mouthed key words in their conversations.
The trial continues.
