Alabama - ~Jury finds Sin City motorcyclist guilty of execution-style shooting~
A Jefferson County jury today found Charlie Joe Wilson, Jr. guilty in the Jan. 11 execution-style shooting death of a man on a Birmingham interstate.
Wilson, a Birmingham resident and member of the motorcycle club Sin City, was convicted of murdering Charles Bevelle, a 33-year-old Bessemer man who was president of a rival motorcycle club Sho' Nuff..
The jury returned a verdict after four hours of deliberation. The trial began Wednesday and closing arguments were made this morning.
Wilson's attorney, Eric Guster, said he would appeal today's verdict. The case was featured on the show "The First 48," and Guster said he needed more time to subpoena outtakes and other show materials.
"We think that their desire to make an arrest within 48 hours led to the conviction of the wrong man," he said.
Guster said he had asked Circuit Court Judge Tommy Nail last week for a continuance but didn't get it.
Prosecutor Jim Neill said it was a pretty simple set of facts in the case, which hinged on the testimony of an eye witness who before the shooting pulled over to the scene of a wrecked vehicle to help. Neill applauded the witness as a good Samaritan who stood up and did the right thing.
"Because of that, a killer goes to prison," he said.
A sentencing hearing is scheduled for Dec. 11. Wilson faces up to life in a prison.
